Citizens of Heaven:
Living as Ambassadors of the King
This five-day devotional follows the heart and flow of the sermon from Sunday, July 19, 2026. We will explore the powerful theme of heavenly citizenship, drawing inspiration from Philippians 3:20-21. Join us each day as we reinforce the central theme of living from our identity as citizens of heaven.
Day 1
Identity Before Assignment
Scripture
Philippians 3:20
“But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.”
Reflection
Before we ever understand what God has called us to do, we have to understand who God has called us to be. This is where the Christian life begins. God does not begin with our assignment; He begins with our identity. Before Jesus sent His disciples into the world, He first called them to Himself. Before they became messengers of the Kingdom, they first became followers of the King.
Paul’s words in Philippians 3:20 carried incredible meaning for the people hearing them. The city of Philippi was a Roman colony, and Roman citizenship was a powerful identity. Even though many citizens lived far away from Rome, their citizenship shaped how they viewed themselves. They carried the values, culture, and authority of Rome wherever they went. Paul uses that familiar picture and points believers to a greater reality: our deepest identity is not found in an earthly kingdom but in the Kingdom of God.
The world around us constantly tries to tell us who we are. Our culture tells us our value is found in what we accomplish, what we own, what people think about us, or what we can produce. Our past tries to convince us that our failures define us. Our circumstances try to convince us that our struggles have the final word. But the Gospel declares something greater: our identity is not built on anything that can change. It is built on Jesus Christ.
When we know we belong to Him, we no longer have to live desperate for approval. We no longer have to spend our lives trying to prove our worth. We can live from the security of knowing that we have already been chosen, loved, forgiven, and adopted into the family of God.
Before you can represent the King, you have to remember that you belong to the King.
Prayer
Jesus, thank You that my identity is not found in my accomplishments, my failures, or the opinions of others. Help me root my life in the truth that I belong to You. Teach me to live from the confidence of being Your child rather than constantly trying to prove myself. Remind me today that my citizenship is in heaven and that my life is secure in You. Amen.
Action Step
Take a few minutes today and write down the things you often allow to define you. Then, beside each one, write: “This does not define me. I belong to Jesus.”
Day 2
Representing the King
Scripture
2 Corinthians 5:20
“Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us.”
Reflection
Lasting change begins when we understand that our identity in Christ is not just something we receive; it is something we live from. We are not simply forgiven people waiting for heaven someday. We are citizens of heaven who have been given a purpose today. The moment Jesus saves us, He also sends us.
Paul describes believers as ambassadors for Christ. In the ancient world, an ambassador was someone sent by a king to represent that king in another place. They did not carry their own message. They did not establish their own agenda. Their responsibility was to faithfully represent the one who had given them authority.
That same calling belongs to every follower of Jesus.
We represent a King we cannot yet see in a world that desperately needs to know Him. This means our lives are no longer only about ourselves. Our words, our choices, our relationships, and our actions all communicate something about the King we serve.
The question we have to wrestle with is not simply, “Do people know that I follow Jesus?” The deeper question is, “When people encounter my life, do they encounter something that looks like Jesus?”
The world does not only need Christians who can explain the Gospel. The world needs Christians who embody the Gospel. People should see the character of Jesus through the way we love, forgive, serve, and treat others.
Being an ambassador means remembering that everywhere we go, we carry the name of the One who sent us.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for trusting me with the responsibility of representing You. Help my words, attitudes, and actions reflect Your heart. Forgive me for the times I have represented myself instead of representing You. Teach me to carry Your love and truth into every place You send me. Amen.
Action Step
Ask yourself today: “If someone only knew Jesus by watching my life, what would they learn about Him?”
Spend time praying over your answer and asking God to shape you into a more faithful representative of Christ.
Day 3
Surrendering to the King
Scripture
Luke 6:46
“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?”
Reflection
One of the greatest challenges of following Jesus is that we often want the benefits of the Kingdom without fully surrendering to the King. We want forgiveness, but we struggle with obedience. We want comfort, but we resist transformation. We want Jesus to help us with our lives, but we sometimes hesitate to give Him authority over our lives.
But Jesus never invited people to simply add Him into their existing plans. He invited people into complete surrender. He did not come to become one part of our lives. He came to become Lord over every part of our lives.
When Jesus called His disciples, He said, “Follow me.” That invitation was not simply an invitation to believe certain things about Him. It was an invitation to surrender their entire lives to Him. They left behind their old identities, their old priorities, and their old ways of living because they had encountered a King who was worth following.
The same invitation remains for us today.
A citizen of heaven cannot live with divided allegiance. We cannot claim Jesus as Lord while allowing comfort, success, approval, control, or personal desires to rule our hearts.
But surrender is not God taking something away from us. Surrender is God freeing us from the things that were never meant to control us. When we surrender our need for control, we discover peace. When we surrender our need for approval, we discover freedom. When we surrender our plans, we discover the purpose of God.
Jesus does not call us to surrender because He wants less for us. He calls us to surrender because He knows He is better for us.
Prayer
King Jesus, reveal the areas of my life that I have not fully surrendered to You. Help me trust Your leadership and release my need to control everything. Teach me to follow You completely and to embrace the transformation You desire to bring in my life. Amen.
Action Step
Identify one area where you have been holding back from God. Spend time today intentionally surrendering that area through prayer.
Day 4
Living in the World Without Becoming Like the World
Scripture
John 17:15
“I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one.”
Reflection
As citizens of heaven, we live with a unique tension. We belong to another Kingdom, but we are still called to live faithfully in this one. Jesus understood this tension. On the night before His crucifixion, He prayed for His disciples because He knew they would face pressure, opposition, and temptation. But His prayer was not that God would remove them from the world. His prayer was that God would strengthen them to remain faithful within it.
This reveals something important about our calling. We are not called to escape the world; we are called to represent Jesus in the world.
Throughout history, followers of Jesus have struggled with this balance. Some have separated themselves so completely that they lose the ability to reach the people around them. Others have blended in so deeply that their lives no longer look different from the culture around them. But Jesus calls us to something greater.
He calls us to be present without being absorbed.
He calls us to love people without losing truth.
He calls us to engage the world without allowing the world to reshape us.
Jesus Himself modeled this perfectly. He was holy, but He was not distant. He was pure, but He was not disconnected. He moved toward broken people with compassion and grace while still calling them into transformation.
As ambassadors of Christ, our responsibility is not to hide the light of Jesus from the world. Our responsibility is to carry that light into the places where darkness exists.
Prayer
Father, give me wisdom to live faithfully in the world around me. Help me love people the way Jesus loved people. Keep me from becoming disconnected from those who need You, and protect me from being shaped by values that pull me away from You. Let my life reflect Your Kingdom. Amen.
Action Step
Think about the places God has placed you—your workplace, neighborhood, family, or friendships. Ask: “How can I represent Jesus more intentionally in this place?”
Day 5
Carrying Heaven Into Everyday Life
Scripture
Colossians 3:17
“And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus.”
Reflection
The reality of being a citizen of heaven is that there is no area of our lives where that citizenship does not apply. We do not become citizens of heaven on Sunday morning and return to living as citizens of earth the rest of the week. Our identity follows us everywhere.
Paul says that whatever we do—our words, our actions, our decisions, our relationships—we should do everything in the name of Jesus. This means that following Christ is not just about religious activities. It is about allowing Jesus to transform every part of who we are.
The world is constantly shaping us. Every message we hear, every value we embrace, and every voice we listen to is discipling us in some direction. The question is not whether we are being influenced. The question is who is influencing us.
Are we being shaped by the temporary things of this world, or are we being transformed by the eternal reality of God’s Kingdom?
Citizens of heaven understand that this life matters, but it is not all there is. We do not live carelessly because this world is temporary. We live faithfully because our King is eternal.
Every act of kindness reveals His heart.
Every act of forgiveness displays His grace.
Every act of generosity reflects His goodness.
Every act of faith declares that another Kingdom is greater than this one.
Until Jesus returns, we have been given one assignment:
Represent the King well.
Prayer
Jesus, let every part of my life reflect Your Kingdom. Help me remember that every moment is an opportunity to honor You. Shape my thoughts, words, decisions, and relationships so that people can see Your character through my life. Make me a faithful ambassador of Your Kingdom. Amen.
Action Step
At the end of today, reflect on these questions:
- Did my words represent Jesus?
- Did my actions reflect Jesus?
- Did people experience the love of Jesus through me?
Ask God to continue forming you into the image of Christ.
You are a citizen of heaven.
You are an ambassador of the King.
And until Jesus returns, your life is a living representation of His Kingdom.
