Citizens of Heaven – Week 1 Devotional
Living From Our True Identity
This five-day devotional follows the heart and flow of the sermon from Sunday, July 19, 2026. We will explore the powerful theme of heavenly citizenship, drawing inspiration from Philippians 3:20-21. Join us each day as we reinforce the central theme of living from our identity as citizens of heaven.
Day 1
Heaven Is Your Homeland
Scripture: “But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.” — Philippians 3:20
Reflection
When Paul tells us that our citizenship is in heaven, he isn’t simply talking about where we’ll spend eternity. He’s reminding us who we are today. Through Christ, your identity has already changed. You still live in your neighborhood, work your job, and walk through the routines of daily life, but your deepest allegiance is no longer to this world.
A citizen carries the values of their homeland wherever they go. In the same way, followers of Jesus are called to bring the culture of heaven into every conversation, every decision, and every relationship. Heaven isn’t just your future destination—it is your present identity.
The world may define you by your occupation, your past, your successes, or your failures. God defines you by your relationship with Christ. You belong to Him.
Prayer
Father, thank You for making me a citizen of heaven through Jesus. Help me remember that my identity is not rooted in this world but in You. Teach me to live today in a way that reflects my true home. Let my life point others toward Your Kingdom. Amen.
Action Step
Several times today, pause and ask yourself: “Am I responding as someone who belongs to heaven?” Let that question shape your words, attitudes, and decisions.
Day 2
Represent Heaven Well
Scripture: “Therefore we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making His appeal through us.” — 2 Corinthians 5:20
Reflection
Philippi was a Roman colony. Though its citizens lived far from Rome, they reflected Roman culture wherever they were. Paul uses that picture to teach us something even greater: Christians are ambassadors of God’s Kingdom.
Wherever you go today, you represent King Jesus.
People should encounter the love, grace, truth, humility, generosity, and holiness of Christ through your life. That doesn’t happen because we try to impress people—it happens because Christ is changing us from the inside out.
The question isn’t whether you’re representing a kingdom.
The question is which kingdom your life reflects.
Prayer
Jesus, let my life represent You well. Help me display Your love in difficult conversations, Your grace toward those who hurt me, and Your truth with compassion. May people see You in me today.
Action Step
Look for one intentional opportunity today to reflect the character of Christ through an act of kindness, forgiveness, generosity, or encouragement.
Day 3
You Don’t Have to Build Your Identity
Scripture: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, and see, the new has come!” — 2 Corinthians 5:17
Reflection
Our culture constantly tells us to create ourselves. Build your brand. Define your truth. Discover who you really are.
The Gospel tells a better story.
Jesus doesn’t ask you to manufacture an identity. He gives you one.
You are a new creation.
That means you no longer have to prove your worth through success or hide behind your failures. Your value isn’t determined by your performance but by Christ’s finished work on the cross.
When your identity rests in Him, criticism doesn’t destroy you, success doesn’t define you, and failure doesn’t have the final word.
Your life is hidden with Christ.
Prayer
Lord, forgive me for looking to other things to tell me who I am. Thank You that my identity is secure in Christ. Help me live with confidence, humility, and peace because I belong to You.
Action Step
Write down three truths Scripture says about your identity in Christ. Read them aloud before you begin your day tomorrow.
Day 4
Identity Before Behavior
Scripture: “See what great love the Father has given us that we should be called God’s children—and we are!” — 1 John 3:1
Reflection
One of the greatest mistakes Christians make is trying to change their behavior without first embracing their identity.
We often think, “If I can pray more, sin less, read my Bible consistently, then maybe God will be pleased with me.”
The Gospel reverses that thinking.
God declares who you are before He tells you how to live.
Because you are His child, you learn to obey.
Because you are forgiven, you forgive.
Because you are loved, you love others.
Transformation grows out of identity. Not the other way around.
The Christian life isn’t about earning God’s acceptance. It’s about living from the acceptance you’ve already received through Jesus.
Prayer
Father, thank You for calling me Your child. Help me stop striving for what You’ve already given me through Christ. Let obedience become the joyful response of a heart that knows it is loved.
Action Step
When you’re tempted to measure your worth by your performance today, stop and remind yourself: “I obey because I belong. Not so that I will belong.”
Day 5
Live As You Belong to Another Kingdom
Scripture: “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” — Colossians 3:2
Reflection
Being a citizen of heaven doesn’t mean escaping the world—it means living differently within it.
As citizens of God’s Kingdom, we love when others hate. We forgive when others retaliate. We remain hopeful when others despair. We choose holiness when compromise seems easier.
Every ordinary day becomes an opportunity to demonstrate that another King is reigning.
Your workplace becomes a mission field.
Your home becomes a place where heaven’s culture is displayed.
Your friendships become opportunities to reflect Christ.
People may never read the Bible before they read your life.
May what they see point them toward Jesus.
Prayer
Lord, help me live in a way that reflects the reality of Your Kingdom. Let my thoughts, attitudes, decisions, and relationships reveal that my true citizenship is in heaven. Use my life to draw others to You.
Action Step
Spend five minutes asking God one simple question: “Where do You want me to represent Your Kingdom this week?” Write down what comes to mind and intentionally respond in obedience.
